Pastoral Poetry
A pastoral poem depicts country life in idyllic, idealized terms. The characters in pastoral poems are naive and innocent yet express themselves with poetic sophistication.
Many pastoral poems express a longing or nostalgia for simpler, more innocent times.
The word "pastor" comes from the Latin word for "shepherd".
Some examples are:
Christopher Marlowe's The Passionate Shepherd to His Love
Sir Walter Raleigh's The Nymph's Reply

Come Live With Me and Love My Dogby Mr. Jordan
Come live with me and love my dog We will journey, the three of us, all the way to Prague I will thank you with hugs and kisses and more If forever my dog you would adore I’ll keep the house clean and neat If you give my dog the occasional treat And I’ll make you your favorite food If to my puppy, you don’t act rude I want the three of us to cuddle, in a blanket upon our couch Where you smile and pet the dog, without behaving like a grouch. I want you to feed her every single day With bacon and roast beef, and also fresh turkey We can go on walks in the country, around the German farms I will be so happy, around my shoulder you’ll wrap your arm. We can stop and have a picnic, while you throw the dog a ball We can do this every season, winter summer spring and fall If you love my dog enough, to give it weekly baths I will do your laundry, I’ll even study math If you love my dog enough, to take it to the vet I’ll repay the favor with a night you shan’t forget Please come with me and love my dog, I will be ecstatic You’ll take my breath away, people will think I’m asthmatic So come with me and love my dog, our love will never end The three of us together, two lovers joined with man’s best friend |
His Replyby Mr. Jordan
I will not come with you and love your dog I would rather kiss a warty frog Her face is ugly, she looks like poop And her eyes have an awkward droop She has the nastiest breath around I want to kick her when she’s on the ground She has a very tiny bladder, so she pees inside the house I would rather live with any other animal, I’d even prefer a mouse She wakes me in the middle of the night, when she wants to pee Which makes me so mad I want to hang her from a tree She doesn’t even like me, I see evil in her eyes Instead of spending a day with her, I’d rather be covered with a hundred flies She makes traveling so difficult, it’s hard to take her places And when people see me holding her pink leash, they give me strange faces What about going back to the States to visit? What do we do about her? We must either pay to fly her, or pay a dog babysitter Either way this dog costs too much, I’ve spent more than I ever would care to Which makes me want to put through her head, a giant metal screw And I forgot to mention her fur, it gets all over the place And when you think of your dog, you should not feel pride, but rather, disgrace So I will not come with you and love your dog I’d rather inhale a ton of smog You can stay with your dog alone Cause I will never, ever, throw your dog a bone! |
